[You shall arise and you shall bestow compassion on Zion][2]

This youth, modest and faithful

God took him in his mercy

On the [ ], the [ Unclear what shin-kuf abbreviation] Holy Sabbath[3], on the 7th of Kislev   In the year 5679 (November 10, 1918) [unclear as to the final nun at end]

[1] Psalm 137:1

[2] Psalm 102:14

[3] Normally the shin-kuf represents shabbat kodesh.  However the conversion dates, either the 20th of Kislev in 5679 or 5683 or the 7th of Kislev do not fall on the Shabbat.

Comment:  This remarkable stone, the first that I have encountered among the myriads of thousands, contains the first verse of Psalm 137 which is often recited at the conclusion of Tishe B’av to evidence the extraordinary sadness and lament of the loss of Israel and the dwelling in exile.  As much as Psalm 137 is a lament, Psalm 102 is one of hope and faith in God will restore Zion.  The full text of Psalm 137 follows and the context of Psalm 102:14 as well.

1. By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, we also wept, when we remembered Zion. 2. We hung our lyres on the willows in its midst. 3. For there those who carried us away captive required of us a song; and those who tormented us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. 4. How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land? 5. If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. 6. If I do not remember you, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy. 7. Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites, the day of Jerusalem; who said, Raze it, raze it, to its foundation. 8. O daughter of Babylon, you are to be destroyed! Happy shall he be, who repays you for what you have done to us! 9. Happy shall he be, who takes your little ones and dashes them against the rock!

Psalm 102: 12-16:  12.  My days are like a stretched shadow, and I like dried-up grass. 13. But you God- forever you dwell and your remembrance endures forever. 14. You will arise and bestow compassion upon Zion, for it is time to bestow compassion upon her, for the sacred time has come.  15.  For your servant has so needed her stones and so valued it’s dust.
